You have been involved in emerging markets professionally for many years. How would you hope to use that experience and expertise to further our mission to engage and uplift young people in these very places?

I’ve been investing in emerging markets for nearly 30 years, and throughout that journey, I’ve travelled extensively—meeting with companies, entrepreneurs, and, most importantly, young people and families across diverse communities. While challenges remain, the progress I’ve witnessed has been remarkable. Infrastructure development is connecting remote rural areas, and technology is fostering inclusion, access to education, and services to previously marginalised segments of the population.

It’s natural to feel discouraged by societal or economic setbacks, but I encourage young people to take the long view. There is real momentum and real opportunity. I’ve seen communities come together to drive transformative change, and I deeply believe in the power of local action. My hope is to share this long-term perspective, to help young people feel seen, inspired and supported. I encourage them to find their people and lean into networks and resources available. I’ve been especially moved by the work of our local partners in areas like mental health and education- real, on-the-ground impact that changes lives.

You’re a valued supporter of EMpower. What informs your philanthropic choices—which organisations you decide to support and why?

I grew up in Venezuela, in a loving family that believed the greatest gift parents can give their children is education. That belief shaped my life. Education opened the door to opportunities I couldn’t have imagined, and I know how fortunate I was to have had that foundation.

Not everyone is given that chance—and that’s what drives my philanthropy. I focus on organisations that empower underserved youth, particularly in emerging markets, where young people represent a significant part of the population. Education, inclusion, and gender equity—especially for young women—are central to the causes I support. That’s why I was immediately drawn to EMpower’s mission. Your commitment to grassroots organisations that are deeply embedded in communities aligns perfectly with my values. Supporting EMpower feels both purposeful and personal.

You strike me as an upbeat, energetic person. In these turbulent times, what inspires you and keeps you hopeful?

Yes, these are turbulent times—geopolitical and economic uncertainty, climate change and a growing sense of polarisation can be overwhelming. What saddens me most is how often we seem to lose our ability to listen to one another with empathy and openness.

But I remain hopeful. History shows us that disruption often precedes progress. Civilisations have faced great upheaval, but time and again, challenges have sparked innovation, resilience, and renewal. I believe current challenges will require us to look at solutions in a way we haven’t before—new ways of thinking, connecting, and solving problems.

Personally, I find hope in the belief that most people act with good intent. If each of us can make just a little more effort to listen—to really try to understand different perspectives—we can rebuild trust, even in uncertain times. That gives me energy, and that’s what keeps me moving forward with optimism.
